The neighborhoods in Southeast Portland are home to modest bungalows, historic estates and new condominiums. The hip boutiques and ethnic restaurants combined with walking trails and sprawling parkland make Southeast Portland a great place to live.

Laurelhurst is a quiet residential neighborhood with few eateries or shops but residents are within a few miles of some of the best restaurants, hottest boutiques and most popular cultural events the area has to offer.
Hawthorne and Belmont are two neighborhoods that sit side-by-side and share the same characteristics: pedestrian-friendly streets lined with vintage clothing shops, eclectic cafes, coffee shops and independent music stores.
Mount Tabor is a residential area that is within walking distance of Southeast Belmont and Southeast Division – areas that offer a collection of shops, restaurants and supermarkets.
Tucked between the Hawthorne and Ross Island bridges, Ladd’s Addition is being transformed from an industrial cul-de-sac into a thriving residential and retail district. The neighborhood has undergone significant revitalization that includes new condominiums and several new businesses.
Southeast Uplift Neighborhood Program is a non-profit coalition of the 20 neighborhood associations in Southeast Portland. It offers free technical assistance for citizen participation, neighborhood development and urban planning.
Industry & Employers
Most of the residents in Southeast Portland work outside of their neighborhoods.
There are a number of jobs in restaurants and shops along Southeast Hawthorne and Southeast Belmont and in Sellwood. One of the biggest employers located in Southeast Portland is Fred Meyer.
Transportation
Tri-Met operates bus service throughout Southeast Portland that connects neighborhoods to the rest of Portland as well as its suburbs.
Schools
Portland Public Schools operates several outstanding schools in Southeast Portland including Laurelhurst Elementary, Fernwood Middle School and Franklin High School – all ranked as top schools.
Sunnyside Environmental School offers a unique curriculum for students in kindergarten through eighth grade that focuses on environmental stewardship and community-building in a hands-on environment. In addition to the exciting theme-based curriculum, it meets the rigorous educational standards set by the State of Oregon.
Reed College is a small liberal arts and sciences college on a 100-acre campus in Southeast Portland. Its structured academic program offers one of the most intellectually rigorous undergraduate experiences in the nation.
Parks and Outdoor Recreation
Southeast Portland has two of the most popular parks in the region: Laurelhurst Park and Mount Tabor Park.
Laurelhurst Park is a 34-acre park tucked into the heart of a residential neighborhood that features walking trails, a spring-fed lake and lots of secluded spots for a summer picnic. The park also has an off-leash area for dogs as well as a soccer field, basketball and volleyball courts and a playground.
Mount Tabor Park was named for the 600-foot extinct volcano that sits in the center of the park. It is known for great hiking trails and as one of the top spots in Portland to watch the sunset. The 195-acre park has excellent views of the mountains and downtown Portland as well as a picnic shelter, amphitheater, playground and sports courts.
Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge is a wetland located on the east bank of the Willamette River. It is home to dozens of different bird species including hawks, quail, pintail, woodpeckers and kestrels. The great blue heron, the official bird of the City of Portland, can also be spotted at Oaks Bottom.
Arts and Entertainment
The Laurelhurst Theater was built in 1923 and was one of the first art deco buildings built in Portland. The theater was renovated in 2001 and has become a popular neighborhood gathering spot that shows a combination of blockbuster hits, classic movies and independent films.
The Bagdad Theater and Pub is another favorite gathering spot. It features second-run movies, local microbrews and casual food.
The Aladdin Theater is a former vaudeville theater that hosts hot musical acts. It was won numerous nods as Portland’s favorite live music venue.
Festivals and Events
There are several farmers markets in Southeast Portland including the Montavilla Farmers Market, the Moreland Farmers Market and the People’s Farmers Market.
The annual Ukrainian Fall Festival takes place in Sellwood. It features live entertainment, and traditional Ukrainian foods like borsch and perogies.
Southeast Portland hosts two annual street fairs: The Belmont Street Fair takes place in the fall and includes a sidewalk sale, live entertainment and artisan crafts and the Division-Clinton Street Fair has a parade, galleries, restaurants and activities for families.
Shopping and Dining
Southeast Portland is a paradise for shoppers. Streets like Southeast Hawthorne and Southeast Belmont are lined with boutiques and restaurants and Sellwood-Moreland is a top spot to find antiques and home décor.
Stars Antiques Mall in Sellwood has more than 250 vendors selling antiques and collectibles. Its unique finds have been showcased in Metropolitan Home and Better Homes and Gardens.
The Jealous Gardener, Powell’s Books on Hawthorne and Presents of Mind are favorite shops for browsing. Southeast Portland is also home to Portland Nursery, the biggest and best garden center in the metro area.
There are also several great restaurants in Southeast Portland including BridgePort Ale House, Genoa, Laughing Planet Café and Caprial’s Bistro.
Pet Central
It is common to see dogs walking with their owners throughout Southeast Portland, jogging in the park or relaxing on the sidewalk of a favorite coffee shop.
There is an abundance of off-leash parks in the area including Brentwood Park, Sellwood Riverfront Park and Woodstock Park.
