Named after Concordia University, which sits within its boundaries, the Concordia area of Northeast Portland is one of the city’s most popular. Concordia University, a private liberal arts institution, has been located in the central portion of the neighborhood since 1905. The historical heart of the neighborhood pairs seamlessly with the influx of young professionals and families moving to NE Portland and bringing a diverse, contemporary feel to the area.
The bustling nature of the Arts district can be felt throughout the neighborhood, but as soon as you leave the main streets, Concordia is also a quiet, comfortable place to own a home. Concordia became a neighborhood in 1905 when the University moved in, so some of the houses in the area are beautifully kept Old Portland, Craftsman, Four Sqaure and bungalow styles. The incredibly desirable nature of the neighborhood means newer homes are becoming more and more available, though, creating a unique snapshot of Portland real estate as it is and was. Concordia also has one of Portland’s best and most active Neighborhood Associations, so neighbors are never without activities and opportunities to work together and connect.
Most of the famous Alberta Arts district is located in Concordia, which houses galleries, boutiques, magazine headquarters, Portland’s only feminist bookstore (made famous by the Portlandia television series), parks, nightlife, and entertainment venues. On the first Thursday of every month during the spring, summer, and fall, the neighborhood comes alive, as Alberta Street is closed to cars and opens to the city’s performers and artisans for a once-weekly parade and festival. Combine this with Northeast Portland’s excellent artisanal beer-brewing community, and award-winning dining, and it’s clear that the best of Portland is at the fingertips of Concordia community members.
Alberta Street is one of Portland’s best streets for exploring on foot, with shops, galleries, and food trucks to spice up the walk. Children love the main play structure and merry-go-round at Alberta Park, and parents love the rubberized surface safety feature. Adults and children alike can take advantage of the open acres, basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball/softball fields, and off-leash dog area year-round. Also located in Concordia is Fernhill Park, which covers 24 acres and features similar attractions as Alberta Park, with the addition of a volleyball court and horseshoe pit.
