One of Portland’s lesser-known neighborhoods, Kenton is located near Hayden Island off of Interstate 5 in the north quadrant of the city. Kenton was a separate industry town when it was built in the early 1900s and was annexed to Portland later, where it briefly served as the cattle capital of the West Coast.
The recent influx of residents have added new flavor to this historic industrial neighborhood, bringing more restaurants and cafes, along with improvements to beautiful Kenton City Park and Peninsula Park. The North Portland Tool Library is also located in this area, forging a community of Portlanders who share tools and resources for at-home construction projects.
There is plenty of activity going on in this tight-knit community. Enjoy Third Thursdays where one can wander the neighborhood and enjoy galleries, shops and restaurants. Kenton is also home to the Portland International Raceway and Portland Metropolitan Expo Center, which hosts over 100 events a year.
Kenton is home to two parks with a variety of amenities for all to enjoy. Kenton Park is a great place for the whole family with a playground, basketball court, soccer field, and beautiful green landscape. Not too far away is Peninsula Park, a 16-acre sanctuary that was home to Portland’s first public rose garden. One can walk the paths, play tennis, or relax at the picnic tables.
