Northeast Portland

Move over downtown, the hottest destinations for shopping, dining and entertainment are North and Northeast Portland.

The neighborhoods are more than just great places to grab dinner and shop for one-of-a-kind clothing and accessories. Both North and Northeast Portland have a number of great neighborhoods with housing options ranging from new condos to historic bungalows.

The most well-known neighborhoods in North and Northeast Portland are Irvington and Alameda, both picturesque neighborhoods in Northeast Portland where historic homes line the streets adjacent to a bustling retail districts.

The arrival of the new Interstate MAX line in North Portland has turned the area from an urban enclave tucked between downtown Portland and Vancouver, Wash., into a thriving neighborhood with dozens of new shops and restaurants scattered amongst its tree-lined streets.
Industry & Employers

Employment opportunities are plentiful in North and Northeast Portland. The major employers in the area are Adidas and University of Portland.
Transportation

MAX Light Rail runs along the edge of Northeast Portland to the Portland International Airport. The latest addition to the service is the Interstate MAX line which connects North Portland to downtown.

Tri-Met also offers regular bus service throughout Portland.
Schools

Portland Public Schools has a huge concentration of schools in North and Northeast Portland including Buckman Elementary, the only magnet arts elementary school in Portland, and daVinci Arts Middle School, a visual and performing arts-focused school.

University of Portland, a private Catholic university offering a number of undergraduate and graduate classes, is located in North Portland.
Parks and Outdoor Recreation

North and Northeast Portland have are home to several popular golf courses and numerous public parks such as Grant Park and Thompson Park in Northeast Portland and Cathedral Park in North Portland.

Cathedral Park is a 23-acre park located beneath the St. Johns Bridge and believed to be one of the 14 Lewis and Clark landing sites in the Vancouver-Portland area.

One of the most impressive natural areas in all of Portland is Sauvie Island. It is a 12,000-acre island with quaint beaches, miles of hiking and biking trails and dozens of farms selling local produce.

Hundreds of species of wildlife like blue herons, bald eagles, black-tailed deer and red foxes call Sauvie Island home.

Howell Territorial Park is also located on Sauvie Island. The 93-acre park is the setting of an agricultural museum and the Bybee Howell House, an authentically-restored farmhouse built in the 1850s.

Delta Park, a sprawling recreation complex complete with five lighted softball fields, a synthetic soccer field and sand volleyball courts, attracts sports enthusiasts from around the state.
Arts and Entertainment

There is no need to venture too far from home to have fun.

The St. Johns Historic Cinema and the Hollywood Theatre are old-fashioned theaters that play popular films. Northeast Portland is also home to the famous McMenamins Kennedy School that features a movie theater, restaurants, hotel rooms and a pub all housed in an original neighborhood school.

The Portland Trail Blazers hit the court at the Rose Garden Arena. The Portland Winter Hawks and the LumberJax lacrosse team show off their skills at Memorial Coliseum. Both venues are also popular for concerts.

High octane entertainment takes place at Portland International Raceway where drivers compete in drag races.
Festivals and Events

The arts scene in Northeast Portland is thriving. Art on Alberta, a last Thursday art walk that runs all year long, attracts art enthusiasts who want to check out the work of local artists.

Art Hop, an annual event on Northeast Alberta Street, features bands, strolling performers, food vendors and dozens of artists showing off – and selling – their work.

The Historic Irvington Home Tour takes place in May and offers a glimpse into some of the grandest homes in the neighborhood. There are several farmers markets in North and Northeast Portland including Interstate Farmers Market, Hollywood Farmers Market and Alberta Farmers Market that sell produce throughout the growing season.
Shopping and Dining

North and Northeast Portland have experienced explosive growth and shops and restaurants have popped up in both neighborhoods.

Northeast Fremont and Northeast Broadway are bustling retail districts with boutiques like Office, Hot Box Betty, Tumbleweed and Kitchen Kaboodle.

Widmer Gasthaus, Fife and Navarre are a few of the popular restaurants in the area. Another local favorite is the Rheinlander, a kitschy Bavarian restaurant hailed for its strolling musicians, singing servers, and fabulous fondue.
Pet Central

Dogs are a common sight in North and Northeast Portland in both the retail district and in the parks.

Several shops and services in the area cater to pets including Furever Pets, a boutique that sells pet food, toys and accessories and Fetch, a full-service dog wash and doggie daycare.

Alberta Park, Arbor Lodge Park, East Delta Park, Fernhill Park, Irving Park and Overlook Park are just a few of the off-leash parks in North and Northeast Portland.

The Oregon Humane Society is also located in Northeast Portland. The shelter places adoptable pets like dogs, cats, rabbits and birds into loving families. It is also a resource for pet owners who need information on pet behavior and local services.
