Prineville is a small town with a big personality, located in the high desert of Central Oregon. Founded in 1868 by settler Barney Prine, the area began as a blacksmith shop and saloon built on the banks of the Crooked River. It slowly developed into a bustling community, and until 1911, was the region’s primary center for trade. When the Union Pacific and Oregon Trunk Railroads extended south to Bend, Prineville’s growth and business came to a halt. Taking action, locals voted to build their own railroad connecting to the main line 19 miles away. Proving to be a success, the town prospered from a booming lumber industry. The cities of Culver and Madras are located nearby.
Prineville is a delightful desert town focused on revitalization. With a strong network of local entrepreneurs and business owners who are expanding and establishing new ventures, the area’s economy has sustained momentous growth. Residents are dedicated to preserving the city’s western heritage while embracing expansion and development. The moderate climate and high quality of life make Prineville one of Central Oregon’s most desirable locations.
Homes reflect Prineville’s western heritage in a changing environment. New construction developments provide modern amenities without harming its surrounding natural beauty. Large, luxury Portland homes constructed with high-end materials and custom finishes feature scenic views and desert landscapes. Other real estate includes farms, acreage, and ranch style homes in traditionally designed neighborhoods.
At the center of the Prineville community is the eclectic downtown district. Dozens of boutiques and specialty stores line the streets where you’ll find feed stores next to galleries and saddle shops next to fine jewelers. Named after the area’s first settler, Barney Prine’s Steakhouse and Saloon serves up hearty meals reminiscent of the town’s proud western heritage. The remarkable Brasada Ranch is a popular destination for both visitors and locals. Golf lovers flock to the resort’s highly respected golf course designed by golf legend Peter Jacobsen. Other resort amenities include spas, fine and casual dining, horseback riding and social events.
Surrounded by parks, rivers, and mountains, outdoor activities abound. Welcoming visitors interested in camping and exploring is the beautiful Prineville Reservoir State Park. During summer months you’ll find locals and visitors swimming, boating and fishing in the park’s cool blue waters. Powell Butte Nature Park is located between Prineville and Redmond and has over 600 acres of trails for hiking and biking. Families congregate at any of the area’s eleven parks offering maintained multi-use paths, play structures and heated outdoor swimming pools.
