Majestic Portland homes, beautifully manicured lawns and massive older trees line wide streets in Irvington, just minutes northeast of downtown Portland. This area is rich in history with about 85 percent of the houses and structures constructed between 1890 and 1948. Irvington was named after Captain William Irving, originally from Scotland. This residential district excels in transportation access and its proximity to downtown. Nearby neighborhoods include Grant Park, Hollywood and Rose City.
Families, professional couples and singles who enjoy the spaciousness of the homes, convenient location and super-friendly people make up this culturally diverse neighborhood. The tree-lined streets are filled with kids playing in the streets and backyard barbeques and yard sales are frequent during the summer.
Portlanders built substantial houses in styles common to the period: arts & crafts, Craftsman, Dutch Colonial, prairie, plantation and bungalow, many with the creative touch of East Coast architectural properties. Most of the houses were built by top architects and builders and are designated as historically significant. Tours are given each spring, where people gather for an up close and personal look.
Convenient to downtown and the Lloyd Center Mall, the largely residential Irvington/Broadway neighborhood boasts two trendy shopping districts of its own. Stroll along Broadway for an impressive array of fashionable shops, cafés, galleries and fine dining establishments. Milo’s City Café offers wine by the glass and open-faced sandwiches in a hip, retro atmosphere. At Cotton Cloud Furniture and Futons every mattress is handcrafted, and it has the largest selection of futon covers in the Portland area. And, the nearby Whole Foods Market sells only the highest quality and organic products available. Near the northern edge of the neighborhood, Fremont Street is home to coffee shops, restaurants, a neighborhood bar and more.
Irving Park is located near the northwest corner of Irvington and includes over 16 acres of flowing lawns, ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, an off-leash area for dogs, free Wi-Fi access, a wading pool, playground and paved picnic areas. Just to the south, the Matt Dishman Community Center provides a basketball court, fitness room, gymnasium, weight room and an indoor swimming pool.
