The Hawthorne District is located just east of the Willamette River and neighbors the Clinton, Ladd’s Addition, Lents and Colonial Heights neighborhoods. Originally home to Oregon’s first mental health hospital, it was known as Asylum Avenue. After the facility moved to its present location in Salem, it was renamed Hawthorne in honor of the cofounder Dr. J.C. Hawthorne.
Anyone is sure to fit in with the eclectic population, including hippies, hipsters, urbanites, young families and entrepreneurs. Residents are very involved in local and global issues, but maintain a casual and relaxed atmosphere. Many of the homes along the tree-lined streets in the residential area are older east Portland homes including Craftsman bungalows, foursquare and some Victorian charmers that exude character and personality. Being eco-friendly inclined, several of the area’s yards display flourishing vegetable gardens.
Hawthorne Boulevard is a popular destination for locally-owned coffee shops, antique stores, cafés and trendy clothing shops, many with a bohemian flavor reminiscent of the 1970's. Clothing shops include vintage and locally-designed fashions, where you can purchase a one-of-a-kind creation or explore The Red Light Clothing Exchange for the perfect vintage treasure.
The Bagdad Theatre and Pub is a favorite neighborhood fixture; visitors are welcome to watch movies while enjoying locally-handcrafted beer. Hawthorne Boulevard also has a rich nightlife where many of the pubs have sidewalk seating so patrons can bring their dogs to enjoy the fun. Many of the Hawthorne hotspots, such as Gold Dust Meridian and Sapphire Hotel, offer a late night happy hour with innovative cocktails and delicious treats.
Mt. Tabor Park, situated on an extinct volcano, is the area’s main outdoor attraction. The park’s geographical location offers a panoramic view of the impressive Cascade Mountains. It also features a popular outdoor amphitheater, water reservoirs, multi-use trails, sport fields and courts and public art displays.
