Captain John H. Couch settled in the Northwest region of Portland in the 1840’s. When he developed the area, he named the blocks alphabetically, which is where they got the name Alphabet District. Couch made his fortune sailing ships with supplies between Portland and San Francisco during the gold rush era. Couch subdivided his land; investors built luxury rental apartments as well as large homes. Three of his daughters built homes along NW 19th Avenue, an area that is now known as Nob Hill.
With its uptown trendy, unique and artsy style, the Alphabet District attracts younger upwardly-mobile and middle-aged urban-minded couples, singles and young families. It is one of the most diverse and exciting Portland zip codes, and is extremely walkable, green and pet-friendly.
This neighborhood has some of the city’s most wonderfully-restored Portland homes that include historic Victorian and craftsman styles as well as other large homes, townhomes and classic brick apartment houses that have been converted into condos.
The Alphabet District is home to the NW 21st and 23rd Avenue neighborhood, a very popular area that has a unique mix of small and large businesses offering shopping, food, galleries, entertainment and more. You'll also find spas, salons, and local markets, all with a creative flair.
You’ll feel like royalty when you enter the cozy oasis that is Marrakesh Moroccan Restaurant. Richly textured Moroccan rugs, ornate silver urns, tapestries and delicious five-course meals await you, along with entertaining belly-dancers. Lush, located on NW 23rd, makes their own products from fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics. From bath, hair and skin care products to fragrances and massage oils, it’s colorful, fun and the best-smelling place in town.
Many residents and visitors have walked up the hill to the Pittock Mansion via sidewalk staircases that wind their way up through the west hills. It’s an urban mountain climbing adventure that takes a good two hours. Nearby Forest Park, covering 5,100 acres on the hillside overlooking the Willamette River is one of the country’s largest urban forest reserves. Approximately 70 miles of recreational trails crisscross the park. Couch Park is an attractive urban green space with amenities that include a basketball court, off-leash dog area, playground and walking paths.
