7 Pacific Northwest Events Going Virtual This Summer

  |  Cannon Beach, Central Oregon, Neighborhood Insight, Portland, Southwest Washington

Summer is here! Over the past few months, we’ve seen cancellations, postponement and other event adjustments that are necessary to keep our communities safe. And while most of our largest events and festivals have been cancelled this summer, there are a handful of events carrying on in unique ways. Several have pivoted to a virtual format or provided an at-home alternative to ensure the celebration can continue safely!

From a virtual sandcastle contest in Cannon Beach to a live streamed soapbox derby in Portland, there are plenty of virtual events happening in the Pacific Northwest this summer. The best part? You can participate in each of these events from the comfort of your living room or backyard — no matter where you live throughout the region!

Arden PDX Virtual Wine Tasting | Portland

Ongoing (Every Sunday)

Arden PDX Virtual Wine Tasting

Arden in Portland is offering virtual wine tastings on their Instagram and Facebook pages each Sunday for free. Each tasting is led by their sommelier and owner Kelsey Glasser. They will focus on a different region each week and select two wines from that region to taste, which will be announced the previous Sunday at the end of the tasting. You are not obligated to purchase the wines from Arden in order to join in the fun; you can simply go to your local wine shop and tell them the varietals you are looking for! If you live in the Portland area, order this week’s set or join Arden’s Monthly Virtual Wine Tasting Club to enjoy four weeks of tasting sets for $130/month (includes $25 credit to the restaurant each month).

Pickathon’s A Concert a Day | Portland

While Pickathon was unfortunately cancelled for 2020, we are still able to access the vault of past concerts until its return in 2021. Since the pandemic started, Pickathon has kept us connected through music — all while supporting artists in need — with their #AConcertADay series. During this time of hardship, with so many artists unable to tour and so many people staying home, they opened their vaults to premiere one full concert a day, streaming for free via The Recording Academy’s Facebook page, Amazon Music’s Twitch channel, and on YouTube as part of #StayHome #WithMe. All donations received will go to MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. Each concert can be viewed on their Facebook page or YouTube channel whenever you feel like watching a concert from your couch!

Virtual Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest | Cannon Beach

June 13–September 7

Cannon Beach Virtual Sandcastle Contest

Although the 56th Annual Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest was not held as planned on June 13, the contest is going virtual this year in order to keep the spirit of the event alive while maintaining physical distancing for public safety. Build a sandcastle this summer any time between June 13 and September 7 and submit a photo or short video of the finished product. You’ll be entered to win in one of two categories: With Haystack Rock and Without Haystack Rock. The contest is open to all ages, team sizes, and skill levels! Full registration and contest details can be found here.

Vancouver History Walking Tours | Vancouver

June 19–August 14

The Clark County Historical Museum is hosting a summer-long series of historic tours, now offered virtually on Facebook Live every Friday at noon. These tours will offer a fascinating glimpse through the windows of time, offering a mix of memories, research and architectural details. Topics through the remainder of the summer include Business and Brews, Old City Cemetery and The Women’s Star, plus tours of downtown Ridgefield, Camas and Battle Ground. Follow the Clark County Historical Museum on Facebook so you don’t miss an upcoming virtual tour!

Deschutes Dash | Bend

July 12–18

Deschutes Dash Bend, OR

To keep us all active and motivated, Deschutes Dash in Bend is carrying on — in a virtual format, that is! Participants are encouraged to complete the distance of their choice, including a sprint and Olympic-distance triathlon and duathlon, plus 5K and 10K runs, on your own or with a couple of friends. You can complete the race any time between July 12 and 18, no matter where you are — or on the original Deschutes Dash course. On July 12, they will be on site at Riverbend Park with a live Facebook video to kick off the virtual event. After you complete the course, post your virtual results on RunSignUp, and of course — share photos and updates on social media with the hashtag #deschutesdash!

Central Oregon Take Home Brewfest | Bend

July 24

Silver Moon Brewing in Bend is hosting a “Take-Home” Brewfest to salvage the celebration and community engagement that has been limited over the last several months. “Attendees” will have the opportunity to purchase a full mixed 18-pack with one limited edition product from participating breweries. You can then take the case home to host your very own brewfest in the comfort and safety of your home or backyard. Each case includes six 16-ounce and 12 12-ounce beers, plus Central Oregon Take-Home Brewfest pint glasses and other swag giveaways. Click here for more information about the event.

Portland Adult Shoebox Derby | Portland

August 15

Since 1997, the community has gathered atop Mount Tabor for the annual PDX Adult Soapbox Derby on the third Saturday of August each year. The event will roll on this year, although it will look a little different, including the name change to “Shoebox Derby”! Instead of heading to the mountain, PASD volunteers, professional model-makers and Axiom Custom Products are building their own Tabletop Tabor, a mini-mountain model reaching a height of 15 feet with all the same curves, straightaways and excitement found on the full-size track. Teams are invited to register and build their own original model cars at home to be delivered before race day. The virtual volcano race will be livestreamed on August 15, complemented by footage from past races, live racer interviews and other interactive experiences. In lieu of food carts, there will be race day food and drink specials available for pickup and delivery throughout Portland. This year, PASD is partnering with Weird Portland United, so it will be an entertaining day for everyone involved! Head to the PDX Shoebox Derby website for more information about this unique event.

Happy Summer!

No matter where your adventures take you, from a hiking trail to your backyard, we hope you have an incredible summer!
