The Story

The story of this unique business model all started with James and Elise Kelly, the owners and makers of 1927 S’mores Company. James grew up in Michigan as an avid sports fan and viewed s’mores as an untapped dessert market. He married native Oregonian Elise in 2012, and they discovered a shared love for this beloved chocolatey campfire treat. The two founded the company in 2015 and began a successful cart catering business and created DIY s’mores kits sold at REI outposts nationwide during the holiday season.

While the company’s story only goes back a few years, the origin of the 1927 S’mores Company name dates back almost a century ago. The name pays homage to the first ever documented s’mores recipe found in the 1927 edition of the Girl Scouts’ Tramping and Trailing newsletter. The Girl Scouts origins and campfire tradition of s’mores informed the woodsy, cabin-inspired theme of their brand and space.

While the elements of a 1927 s’more is similar to what we all know and love, James and Elise have taken this traditional dessert to a whole new level. The base is somewhat of a combination of a shortbread cookie and a graham cracker, creating a sturdier foundation. And the sometimes-infused marshmallows are square, so you get an even, perfectly balanced experience with each bite. Perhaps the main difference between your everyday s’more and a 1927 s’more is the absence of hard chocolate. Each s’more is drizzled with a variety of toppings, including bittersweet fudge, salted caramel sauce, or lemon curd. And to complete the fun and artisanal experience, each s’more is individually torched by hand to create a warm, melty and uniquely delicious treat.

Stick with the basics with The Original 1927, made with honey grahams, a fluffy vanilla marshmallow, and a bittersweet chocolate ganache. Or branch out and try the Berry Cheesecake, comprised of a berry marshmallow, cream cheese spread and fresh raspberries, or The Old Fashioned with a whiskey dark cherry and bitters marshmallow topped with a whiskey orange glaze. Oh! And don’t miss the Portland Porter, made with a Backwoods Brewing Porter marshmallow, topped with caramel sauce and crushed pretzels. And if you’re feeling extra creative, you can always build your own s’more and choose whatever graham cracker, marshmallow and sauce/spread you want! Although they are certainly known for their s’mores, 1927 offers an array of indulgent treats, including ice cream grahamwiches, a s’mores bar, a s’mores parfait, and a variety of specialty beverages both hot and cold. The peanut butter toffee cocoa makes an excellent accompaniment to your s’more of choice — and it is even topped with a lightly toasted marshmallow of its own!

After a successful run as a cart catering business, the 1927 team was able to open their very own brick and mortar store in downtown, occupying the space that previously held the Chizu cheese bar. Also known as a “s’morefront,” the space is small, intimate and reminiscent of a cozy log cabin — enough to make you forget you’re in the center of downtown. The shop is outfitted with a menu board inspired by U.S. Forest Service signs, lush ferns, wood shelving, lantern lights, and other details to make you feel like you stepped into someone’s rustic outpost in the woods.

The s’morefront is located right next to the Multnomah Whiskey Library, Tasty n Alder, Bistro Agnes, and other popular bars and restaurants. 1927 stays open late on Friday and Saturday evenings to accommodate the late-night crowds. While they are family-friendly at all hours, 1927 turns up the hip hop on weekend nights for an extra fun atmosphere. This is the perfect place to top off the evening with a decadent sweet treat!
