How to Incorporate the Sherwin-Williams 2020 Color of the Year Into Your Home

  |  Homecare & Lifestyle, Your Place

Last year, we discussed how to incorporate the Sherwin-Williams 2019 Color of the Year into your home. The earthy tone of Cavern Clay gave us a desertous, warm vibe — and this year, we’re going a whole different direction with the Sherwin-Williams 2020 Color of the Year!

The 2020 Color of the Year is Naval SW 6244, a rich navy that emits a sense of calm and quiet confidence. And you may be thinking this is just your average navy — but think again…

As we enter a whole new decade, Naval is paving the way for “wellness of the mind, body and soul — a clean palette for self-nurturance” (from Sherwin-Williams). There’s a certain freshness, confidence and peace about the hue that makes you feel grounded and calm as we enter a new decade.

Going full circle back to the 1920s, Naval is also a nod to the Roaring Twenties, when Art Deco originated. “Naval fuses the striking and bold opulence of Art Deco with the awe-inspiring power of nature — from the infinite night sky to the mysterious depths of the sea — bringing navy out of its comfort zone to usher in an empowering new year and fresh decade of change” (from Sherwin-Williams).

If Naval has caught your eye and your heart, consider how you might incorporate this dark, bold color into your home — whether you would like to add a navy throw pillow or paint your entire living room.

Pair With Gold Details

Sherwin-Williams suggests pairing gold metallic accents with Naval — and we couldn’t agree more! This contrast is sophisticated, chic and elegant. They also recommend using the gold-esque Tarnished Trumpet SW 9026 or Midday SW 6695, or the natural green tone, Kale Green SW 6460.

The kitchen in this gorgeous Alameda Ridge home is proof of the gold-and-navy pairing — showing just how striking the two look together.

Paint an Accent Wall

Of course, one of the most straight-forward ways to incorporate this paint color into your home is to paint an accent wall — or an entire room. Designer and blogger Sarah from Room for Tuesday shows us how powerful a Naval room can look in her basement and media room makeover. She took the Naval renovation a step further by adding navy furniture, navy curtains and navy acoustic wall panels for a monochromatic look.

Add Greenery

Naval also pairs well with all shades of green. Bring the outdoors by combining Naval with a plant — or an entire plant collection. “The inclusion of live greenery and mineral based materials like marble, allow us to create a natural sanctuary that encourages rejuvenation in your everyday life. It’s about slowing down to appreciate the beauty in nature and how you can bring it indoors” (from Sherwin-Williams).

Paint Furniture

If you’re less committed to painting an entire room, you could start by upcycling a piece of furniture or two with a coat of Naval paint. Again, this beautiful home in Alameda Ridge has an excellent example of a piece of furniture painted Naval — plus a throw blanket and accent pillows thrown in for good measure.

Pair With Marble

The stark contrast of light marble and the dark Naval is pleasing on the eye — and extremely chic and modern. If you’re not ready to remodel your entire kitchen, consider a more minor bathroom or laundry room renovation. You can paint your bathroom cabinets and drawers Naval and add a marble countertop — and easily add modern gold knobs and drawer handles to complete the look. You can even skip all the DIY by purchasing a vanity that has all the pieces you’ll need!

Throw Pillows + Blankets

Because Naval pairs with many colors, you can even just add a throw pillow or blanket to your living room. Funnily enough, a rusty tone (like last year’s Cavern Clay!) and navy pair quite well together — if you really want to stick with the Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year theme.

Paint Your Exterior

Go big or go home by painting the entire exterior of your home with Naval. This property on 20 acres in Cornelius and this adorable Saltbox home in Portland’s Dunthorpe neighborhood are excellent examples of this option. In the Pacific Northwest, the combination of Naval with lush evergreen foliage works especially well.

Add a sense of serenity to your bathroom with navy tiling — either on the floor or along the wall. This look is reminiscent of ocean waves and provides a unique look while remaining complementary to white elements like the tub, sink and toilet.

Test Out Naval in Your Home

You may be thinking, this sounds great and all, but what about my home? Use the Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap® Visualizer to virtually paint a room using any Sherwin-Williams color — including Naval! You can use their photo or upload your own to envision what this gorgeous color might look like in your home. This is so much easier than trying swatch after swatch on a wall and imagining what a tiny sample would look like on a massive wall!
